Family blessings and last words are what we find in these passages between Jacob, Joseph, and David.  Each one was careful to specifically instruct their sons about the about the past and the future.  David reminded Solomon that he needed to keep the statutes, commands, rules, and testimonies as written in the Law of Moses and to be strong man walking in God’s ways.  David gives Solomon the keys to prosperity before he dies.  Jacob blesses all his children and the sons of Joseph.  These final messages of life give an opportunity to live life in freedom through sound teaching and doctrine.

The deep family tie that we see here goes back to the covenant that God had with Abraham.  We can see two generations later it is still being shared within the families.  We can fast forward 14 generations from Abraham and it is still being discussed with Solomon.

In our world today, with so many broken homes, the valuable lessons of being part of this great family of God and the covenant that has continued through the generations to our day and time are lost.  We can be certain that the Word of God is true and these accounts of people, just like us, were God’s  chosen.  We are charged with this understanding that because of Abraham down through to David and then to Yeshua that we are now God’s choice to show His great love to the world by our understanding of faith in Yeshua, and the generations that came before in covenant.

When Ya‘akov had finished charging his sons, he drew his legs up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.” – Genesis 49:33

When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’’ – 1 Kings 2:1-4

“By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff.  By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones” – Hebrews 11:21-22

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.  Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” – 1 Peter 2:16-17

Questions for Reflection:

▪ Like Joseph, am I able to follow the instructions of those who hear from the Lord?

▪ Am I able to receive that I am part of this great family who God chose to accomplish His plan for world redemption?

▪ Do I understand the importance of blessing my children and teaching them in the ways of God?

▪ Have I discovered the key to living as people who are free?

▪ Like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, do I see myself as a servant of God in the land of Egypt?
